Most people treat their guest towels like fine china. They keep the plush sets folded in the closet for visitors, using the old, scratchy daily towels for everyday use. This loss happens because the cotton fibers are breaking down. A study by researcher Anne Buisson, covered by ScienceDaily, found that tiny cracks form inside the cotton fibers during a normal laundry routine. These cracks can weaken the fabric by 25 percent or more. The lint caught in the trap is essentially your towel breaking apart.

The problem is often a combination of two common laundry habits. First, fabric softener leaves a thin, waxy film on the fabric. This coating repels water, so the towel slides moisture around instead of absorbing it. Second, high heat dries out the cotton fibers. Cotton towel maker MATTEO explains that drying at 180°F (82°C) or above damages the cotton, turning the fibers brittle and snapping them. When you combine a waxy coating with high heat, you seal the surface of the towel and crack the structure at the same time. This double hit affects guest towels just as much as daily towels, even though the guest ones are washed less often.
Skip the fabric softener and dryer sheet completely on any load with towels in it. Just leave them out. This alone does most of the work to preserve the towels. Turning down the heat is a simple change that protects the towel’s structure. The dryer should never be set to high heat for towels. Using low or medium heat preserves the cotton fibers.
