Your leftovers keep coming out weird, with one edge molten, the middle still cold, and the plate somehow hotter than the food on it. This uneven heating has led you to run everything for an extra minute, then two, then three, and you’ve probably decided the microwave is on its way out.

The issue isn’t the microwave’s age, but rather a specific spot that’s almost never wiped. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that microwave energy is absorbed by food, producing heat, but anything else inside the microwave that absorbs this energy steals from your dinner.

A peer-reviewed ScienceDirect review states that carbon materials are very good microwave absorbers. When food splatters bake on, they slowly turn into carbon, creating a crusty and dark layer that eats the energy supposed to reach your food.

This burnt-on layer is the main reason your meal heats unevenly, not because the microwave is getting weak. The carbon buildup also creates a conductive path, leading to sparks and potentially causing a repair bill in the hundreds.

The Waveguide Cover

The problem spot is the waveguide cover, usually located on the ceiling or upper right side wall of the microwave. It’s a small rectangular panel that lets microwave energy pass through while blocking food splatters from reaching the electronics behind it.

Most people don’t clean this area, assuming it’s a factory sticker. However, it’s the single most important thing to clean, as it’s covered in months of baked-on splatter that’s been quietly ruining your heating.

According to Whirlpool’s official cleaning documentation, not cleaning this area causes electrical damage, sparking, and buildup that ruins the appliance.

Cleaning the Waveguide Cover

To fix the issue, fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and add 1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar or the juice of half a lemon. Run the microwave on high for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the water hits a full boil.

Leave the door closed for another 3 to 5 minutes, then wipe every interior surface with a warm, damp microfiber cloth, paying special attention to the ceiling and the waveguide cover.

Dry everything with a clean towel and leave the door open a few minutes to fully air out. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that a damaged microwave can leak radiation, so keeping the waveguide cover clean is essential for safety.

After cleaning the waveguide cover, your food should heat evenly again, and the burnt smell during operation should clear within the next few cycles. This simple habit can help prevent a fried microwave and keep yours safe.
